*305# is the NCC-mandated unified VAS unsubscribe code — works on all four networks. Below are network-specific backups.

Do Not Disturb

A free NCC service. Once active, telcos can no longer auto-subscribe you via promo SMS. Works on every network through 2442.

The nuclear option

Blocks every unsolicited promotional message and IVR call. Bank alerts and direct telco messages still come through.

Log a deduction

SMS decoder

If unsubscribing and DND haven't stopped the deductions, escalate. Generate a complaint letter and send it.

Know the tricks

Auto-subscriptions don't just happen by accident. Here's how they catch you.

The pop-up trap

Browsing on mobile data, a banner pops up: "Click OK to continue." That's not a continue button — it's a subscription confirmation. Always read what you're tapping.

The flash SMS

A flash message appears on your screen asking you to reply YES, OK, or with a code. Replying confirms a paid subscription. If you didn't initiate it, ignore it.

Free trials that aren't free

"Free 3 days — caller tune service." Day 4, you're being billed ₦50/day. Always check the SMS for the auto-renewal amount and use *305# to opt out before it kicks in.

Recharge and watch

After every recharge, check your balance and watch it for 10 minutes. If it drops without you using anything, dial *305# immediately to see what's eating it.

Your right to refund

NCC regulations say you're entitled to a refund for unauthorized VAS charges. Telcos must refund within 24 hours of a valid complaint. Log everything in Track as evidence.

Monthly hygiene

Dial *305# once a month even if everything seems fine. New subscriptions can creep in silently. Make it part of your routine.
